Attempted node bootup gives a screen reading "Error loading operating system" on Oracle Database Appliance (ODA)

Created from <SR 3-9846170601>

Applies to:

Oracle Database Appliance X4-2 - Version All Versions to All Versions [Release All Releases]
Oracle Database Appliance X3-2 - Version All Versions to All Versions [Release All Releases]
Oracle Database Appliance Software - Version 2.1.0.1 and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

Ever since the Oracle Database Appliance (ODA) was first received, one of the nodes has failed to boot the operating system. An attempted boot-up does not even get as far as a GRUB screen.  Even after re-imaging, it still shows a message saying "Error loading operating system".

Cause

The system may be trying to boot from something other than the internal hard drives, if the BIOS boot order is set wrong.

For example, if the BIOS boot priority list shows the USB at the top of the list, this boot-up failure can occur.

Solution

The BIOS boot priority list should shows the internal disks at the top of the list
