Symptoms

Logging Server or Reporting software receives reports from Engineered Systems Management Switch, similar to

Percentage of Outbound Packets discarded at Network Interface GigabitEthernet1/2 are 8.545%. It has crossed warning (1%) or critical (3%) threshold. Oracle Engineered System Cisco Switch: Metric Group=Network Interfaces, Metric=Outgoing Discards(%), Metric value=8.545

Cause

Check the cabling plan, if this port is connected to a system processor (ILOM) port. Such connection is on 100 Mbit/s speed.

The cabling plan is part of  the User's Guide. For Example see → Cabling Tables for Oracle Exadata . Check for "Integrated Lights Out Manager Cabling Tables" and "Integrated Lights Out Manager Cabling Tables" in the "Gigabit Ethernet Port" column for your reported port.
For our message above, reported GigabitEthernet1/2 maps to Integrated Lights Out Manager Cabling Table line 1 Gigabit Ethernet Port 2. So this port is connected to ILOM port of a Storage server.

With this information we can explain the message.

E.g. in case we have many broadcasts from the uplink, they will come in in 1 GBE speed rate.
But ILOM and admin port connections are slower. So the switch may need to drop some of the packets.

In case of real data transfer, such packet would get re-transmitted.
When TCP is used (e.g. with ssh), the transmit window adopts to the slower speed. So all working normal.

Solution

The message can be ignored in this case, reporting on the switch and management software can be adopted to not report this.
