Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

The HP/IBM LTO4 drives that are configured with either a Dione or Belisarius card for encryption and higher generation drives can have issues when their Dione/Belisarius cards or Ethernet interfaces are connected to Network switches that are on an open or public network.
Also issues have been seen when these drives are connected on a private network or VLAN and network security scans are run on that network.

Cause

These drive's Dione and Belisarius cards and drive Ethernet connections were not designed to be out on an open or public network and thus cannot handle the busy network traffic that those networks typically bring.
Likewise intrusive network security scan tools can cause excessive traffic and strain on the drives and their Dione and Belisarius cards.

Solution

Per HP and IBM their LTO4 and higher generation drives and their underlying Encryption cards should not be connected to an open or public network and should not be connected to a network that has network security tools run on them.

Reference:
HP LTO4 drives configured for encryption will have a Dione card
IBM LTO4 drives configured for encryption will have a Belisarius card
HP LTO5 and higher drives have an Ethernet port that acts as both an encryption port and a service port
IBM LTO5 and higher drives have 2 Ethernet ports.  One that connects to the Belisarius card for encryption and another that is used for a service port for the drive.
