StorageTek SL150 Modular Tape Library - Version All Versions and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.

When checking the library logs everything looks fine, so not quite sure what is causing this failure.

Symptoms

Failure from the library reported by the Veeam Backup application.
When trying to backup files to tape via Customer notes:
Veeam the SL150 loads a tape into the drive, prepares to write to the drive and then reports an error that the magazine is unlocked. No files are backed up and the tape is returned to the library.

Here is a section of the Veeam log:
[25.04.2014 11:21:52] <01> Info ['This server' session task]: 32 directories and 114 files of 14.5 MB to backup
[25.04.2014 11:21:52] <01> Info Getting Changer alerts from device \\.\SCSI#Changer&Ven_STK&Prod_SL150#7&a066d41&0&000101#{53f56310-b6bf-11d0-94f2-00a0c91efb8b}

[25.04.2014 11:21:52] <01> Error Tape changer alert: The library cannot operate without the magazine.
[25.04.2014 11:21:52] <01> Error Terminated (Veeam.Backup.Common.TerminatedException)

I have verified that all magazines are locked via the SL150 user interface.

===============================================================================

Veeam “getTapeAlerts” command uses LOG SENSE SCSI command for getting library/drive errors.
In this case changer returns an 0012h error code. As I see in SL150 SCSI reference this error is critical, that’s why we terminate the job.

[25.04.2014 11:21:52] <01> Info [AP] (7a41) command: 'getTapeAlerts\n\\.\SCSI#Changer&Ven_STK&Prod_SL150#7&a066d41&0&000101#{53f56310-b6bf-11d0-94f2-00a0c91efb8b}\n'

Cause

Veeam software issue.

Solution

Veeam provided Version 8 beta code. They have re-architected the tape backup service so that it runs on a separate server from the Veeam Master server. Been successful in inventorying tapes in the SL150, backing up files, importing and exporting tapes from the SL150. It appears that the new version of Veeam will resolve the outstanding problems it was encountering with the SL150.
