Symptoms

The replication starts and completes successfully, but an alert message is shown at completion:

"Finished replicating 'Library' to appliance 'nas429'. Target needs to be upgraded."

When inspecting the source alert.ak.txt we see:

So replication was successful.

Cause

From MOS Document ID 1595549.1 - Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System: How to set up Replication

Replication source and destination must be same major code release
Replication destination must be the same or newer minor code release
Replication uses ZFS features, this means you need to apply deferred updates after code upgrades are completed

Solution

Upgrade the replication target host to the same major and minor code (or newer) as the replication source host and apply deferred updates when appropriate.

Remark:

According to Bug 18521183, this warning may be issued when the source appliance supports 1MB volblocksize but the target does not. If the datasets being replicated are using 1MB volblocksize the replication will fail. If the volblocksize is smaller, the replication succeeds but the message is still issued as a warning.

If the replication is successful the message can be ignored.
