Applies to:

Sun Fire 280R Server - Version All Versions and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

The system suffers a fatal error reset and a message is reported in the console logs. The messages file doesn't capture the error since this is an HW fatal reset and Solaris is stopped abruptly, and no orderly shutdown is performed. No FMA is involved.

Looking at the console logs in RSC (Remote System Control), the Fatal Error Reset points to the 'PCI-PBM' the PCI-PBM is related to the PCI Bridge chip.

From RSC we get the error below:

rsc> consolehistory

...

Fatal Error reported by: (PCI-PBM)
Fatal Error reported by: (PCI-PBM)

...

NOTE: the RSC should be configured appropriately to send the errors to RSC console.

Please refer to the documents below for RSC configuration:

How to set up and disable the RSC console on Sun Fire[TM] 280R, V480, V490, V880, V890 and V880z servers. (Doc ID 1011888.1)
How To Verify Remote System Controller (RSC) is Configured and Current on Sun Fire[TM] 280R/V480/V490/V880/V890 servers (Doc ID 1011569.1)

Cause

Fatal error in the PCI Bridge chip.

Solution

PCI Bridge Chip is on System Board. Replacing the System Board fixed the issue in this Case.
