Symptoms

Sun Storage Common Array Manager (CAM) reports an open alarm for "Snapshot repository <vol_name> is over threshold". In this example, the alarm is open for a Sun Storage 6180 Array.

Event Code         : 90.66.1042
Event Type         : 6180.ProblemEvent.REC_REPOSITORY_OVER_THRESHOLD
Severity           : 0
Sample Description : Snapshot repository {0} is over threshold.
Probable Cause     :
The snapshot's repository volume capacity has exceeded a
warning threshold level. If the repository volume's
                     capacity becomes full,
its associated snapshot volume can fail.
Recommended Action :
You will need to increase the size of the volume, stop
adding data, or otherwise change your copy options.
Refer to the Service Advisor for more details.

Cause

The snapshot repository utilization is over the specified threshold. The repository volume's failure policy determines what happens when the repository becomes full. The failure policy can be set to either fail the snapshot (default setting) or fail incoming I/Os to the snapshot's base volume.  If you do not resolve this problem, this is the last warning you will receive before the snapshot's repository volume becomes full.  You have the option of increasing the capacity of the repository volume or increasing the repository threshold capacity warning level. Note that increasing the warning threshold will reduce the time you have to respond the next time you receive a threshold exceeded notification.

Solution

Once the snapshot repository is over the specified threshold, there are several options to handle the data depending on your configuration.

  • Expand your Snapshot capacity
    1. Click Sun Storage Common Array Manager.
The navigation pane and the Storage System Summary page are displayed.
    2. In the navigation pane, expand the array you want to work with, and choose Snapshots.
The Snapshot Summary page is displayed.
    3. Click the snapshot whose capacity you want to expand.
The Snapshot Details page is displayed.
    4. Go to the Reserve Details section of the page, and click the Expand button.
The Expand Volume page displays the current capacity.
    5. Specify the volume capacity you want, and click OK.

  • Resnap your Snapshot volume
    1. Click Sun Storage Common Array Manager.
The navigation pane and the Storage System Summary page are displayed.
    2. In the navigation pane, expand the array you want to work with, and choose Snapshots.
The Snapshot Summary page is displayed.
    3. Click the check box to the left of each snapshot that you want to resnap.
      This enables the Resnap button.
    4. Click Resnap.
Upon completion of the new snapshot, a confirmation message is displayed.

You will lose the copy of the data created in your previous Snapshot. Resnapping your Snapshot creates a new point-in-time image.

  • Stop I/O to the Snapshot
    1. Quiesce I/O to the Snapshot volume.

  • Disable the Snapshot volume
    1. Click Sun Storage Common Array Manager.
The navigation pane and the Storage System Summary page are displayed.
    2. In the navigation pane, expand the array for which you want to disable a snapshot, and choose Snapshot.
The Snapshot Summary page is displayed.
    3. Click the check box to the left of each snapshot that you want to disable.
      This enables the Disable button.
    4. Click Disable.
You are prompted to confirm the disabling of the snapshot volumes.
    5. Click OK.
When the selected snapshots have been disabled, a confirmation message is displayed.

You will lose the copy of the data created in your previous Snapshot. Disabling a volume snapshot does not remove the volume snapshot or its associated reserve volume. You can re-enable the snapshot by selecting it from the Snapshot Summary page and click the Re-snap button.
