Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

The server may be logging a large number of keyswitch status changes:

Jun 2 00:30:36 hostname rmclomv: [ID 770364 kern.notice] NOTICE: keyswitch change event - state = UNKNOWN
Jun 2 00:30:42 hostname rmclomv: [ID 770364 kern.notice] NOTICE: keyswitch change event - state = NORMAL
Jun 2 00:33:36 hostname rmclomv: [ID 770364 kern.notice] NOTICE: keyswitch change event - state = UNKNOWN
Jun 2 00:33:38 hostname rmclomv: [ID 770364 kern.notice] NOTICE: keyswitch change event - state = NORMAL
Jun 2 00:33:45 hostname rmclomv: [ID 770364 kern.notice] NOTICE: keyswitch change event - state = UNKNOWN
Jun 2 00:34:57 hostname rmclomv: [ID 770364 kern.notice] NOTICE: keyswitch change event - state = NORMAL
Jun 2 00:35:13 hostname rmclomv: [ID 770364 kern.notice] NOTICE: keyswitch change event - state = UNKNOWN
Jun 2 00:35:57 hostname rmclomv: [ID 770364 kern.notice] NOTICE: keyswitch change event - state = NORMAL
Jun 2 00:36:02 hostname rmclomv: [ID 770364 kern.notice] NOTICE: keyswitch change event - state = UNKNOWN
Jun 2 00:36:28 hostname rmclomv: [ID 770364 kern.notice] NOTICE: keyswitch change event - state = NORMAL
Jun 2 00:36:56 hostname rmclomv: [ID 770364 kern.notice] NOTICE: keyswitch change event - state = UNKNOWN
Jun 2 00:38:11 hostname rmclomv: [ID 770364 kern.notice] NOTICE: keyswitch change event - state = NORMAL

There were no faults listed in prtdiag, and the main system amber LED was off:

--------------------------------------------------
Led State:
--------------------------------------------------
Location   Led                   State       Color
--------------------------------------------------
SYS        ACT                   on          green
SYS        SERVICE               off         amber

All voltages, temperatures, and fan speeds were OK

Keyswitch messages were also visible in the ALOM log history:

scadm-loghistory.out
Jun 05 21:11:08 : 00070002: "Keyswitch position has been changed to NORMAL."
Jun 05 21:10:49 : 00070002: "Keyswitch position has been changed to UNKNOWN."
Jun 05 21:00:22 : 00070002: "Keyswitch position has been changed to NORMAL."
Jun 05 21:00:19 : 00070002: "Keyswitch position has been changed to UNKNOWN."
Jun 04 20:18:42 : 00070002: "Indicator SYS.ACT is now ON"
Jun 04 20:16:51 : 0004000b: "Host System has read and cleared bootmode."
Jun 04 20:16:49 : 00040002: "Host System has Reset"
Jun 04 20:14:24 : 0004000b: "Host System has read and cleared bootmode."
Jun 04 20:14:22 : 00040002: "Host System has Reset"
Jun 04 20:12:54 : 00070002: "Indicator SYS.ACT is now OFF"
Jun 04 13:24:29 : 00070002: "SC System booted."

The issue first appeared with old firmware and ALOM versions:
scadm-version-v.out

SC Version v1.4
SC Bootmon Version:  v1.4.0
SC Bootmon checksum: DE232BFF

version: 'OBP 4.13.0 2004/01/19 18:28'

The behavior was unchanged after updating ALOM and OBP:
scadm-version-v.out

SC Version v1.6
SC Bootmon Version:  v1.6.10
SC Bootmon checksum: 131B575F

version: 'OBP 4.30.4.a 2010/01/06 14:45'

Cause

The problem can be caused by either a faulty SCC reader or the cable running between the keyswitch and the SCC reader.  The cable would be more likely to cause the problem if the server was opened for hardware replacement and the cable was snagged or damaged.

The observed behavior closely resembles the problem outlined in the following bug:

Bug 15360070  SUNBT6491089 SYSTEM SHUTDOWN, ALOM LOG CONTAINS MANY KEYSWITCH UNKNOWN & NVRAM F

As a part of that bug investigation, it was found that replacing the card reader resolved the keyswitch unknown messages.

============================================
All,

I am now certain the faults are within the
SCC Readers. We have proven this by simple
FRU replacement and testing of components
on the SCC Reader, such as the NVRAM, Power
button, and most importantly, the keyswitch.

Solution

Replace the SCC reader and SCC reader to keyswitch cable.

PARTS REQUIRED:
Part number: 370-5127
Part location: SCC reader
Quantity: 1
Description: System Configuration Card Reader (FRU)

Part number: F560-2825
Part location: 530-3712 keyswitch cable
Quantity: 1
Description: Internal Cable Kit [SKU] (FRU)
