Symptoms

When trying to change ownership of a subdirectory with SMB it fails with "Unable to set new owner for <user>.  You do not have the Restore privilege required to set this user/group as owner."

Cause

The user that is trying to make the change is not in the group (Domain Users) that owns the subdirectory but does have ACL permissions from another group (newgroup).

ZFSSA:> confirm shell ls -lVd /export/home
drwx--x--x+687 10000    Domain Users     687 Jun  5 16:14 /export/home
            everyone@:--x---a-R-c--s:-------:allow
  group:Domain Admins:rwxpdDaARWcCos:fd-----:allow
               owner@:rwxp-DaARWcCos:-------:allow
               group@:--x---a-R-c--s:-------:allow
       group:newgroup:rwxpdDaARWcCos:fd-----:allow

The project/share has the Restrict ownership change set.

Pool2/local/default/home  rstchown                         on                                        default

Solution

By unchecking the Restrict ownership change in the General part of the project/share will allow the user to change the ownership of the subdirectory.
