Symptoms

The Major Event Log (MEL) is a file collected when generating a SupportData with Common Array Manager (CAM).  Instead of reporting logical locations in the array, they are all showing up as  "UNDEFINED". In this example, the log file is not reporting the location of a disk failure. (The log file has been parsed for simplicity.)

Cause

There is a bug in firmware which has been fixed in the following releases.

  • 6000 series arrays running the 07.xx.xx firmware need to be upgraded to 07.60.36.10(bundled with CAM 6.6.0.12) or later. Review the firmware matrix for your respective array type
  • 25xx series arrays running the 07.xx.xx firmware need to be upgraded to 07.35.55.10(bundled with CAM 6.6.0.12) or later.
  • Arrays running the 06.xx.xx Series firmware need to be upgraded to CAM 6.6 or later.
  • See <Document 1296274.1> How to Download Common Array Manager (CAM) Software and Patches, for assistance with CAM (and subsequent firmware) upgrades.

Solution

Until such upgrades can be scheduled, use the service command to collect the major event log. The log file will correctly report array locations. For example...

Find the service command in:
Solaris: /opt/SUNWSefms/bin
Windows: c:\Program Files\Sun\Common Array Manager\Component\fms\bin
Linux: /opt/sun/cam/private/fms/bin

# /opt/SUNWsefms/bin/service -d <arrayname> -c save -t mel -p <data location> -o majorEventLog.txt
  • <arrayname> = The name of the storage array. For example 6140-prod
  • <data location> = the directory where you will save the file. For example /var/tmp
