StorageTek T10000C Tape Drive - Version All Versions and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

The sno 2B31 "Attempted to return a command frame that was already free" on T10000C is caused by the host not giving enough time for the drive read recovery to complete.

Drive interface trace in dump supplied shows host at Port ID - 8215 00 is reading.
Drives goes into a read recovery at block id [000FA8E7].
4 minutes later drive receives an Abort exchange from the host for the read command still in recovery.
1 minute after the Abort drive returns Perm Read Error to Host.
Because the exchange was already aborted (Corresponding read command frame not active) this cause the 2B31 sno dump at the drive.

Cause

Host aborting the job and not giving enough time to drive to complete internal recovery on a read.
Target Reset is enabled at the host/HBA

Solution

Customer needs to disable the "Enable Target Reset in the Qlogic HBA Advanced Parameters settings.
