Symptoms

Unable to set color depth to 8bpp using the onboard ast graphics device.

# svcs cde-login
STATE STIME FMRI

# svccfg
svc:> select application/x11/x11-server
svc:/application/x11/x11-server> setprop options/default_depth=8
svc:/application/x11/x11-server> quit
# svcadm restart cde-login

Cause

The Service Processor does not support 8bit colour.

 

Solution

Software emulation may provide 8bpp though this is outside of the scope of support from a platform side.

 

default_depth needs to be set to either 16bit or 24bit colour.
