Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

Both Fan trays are marked as failing.

v880 / the server will shutdown after these messages.

{3} ok
WARNING: Fan Tray 3 (I/O) too slow or stopped
FATAL: Both I/O Fan Trays (3 and 4) too slow or not present!

WARNING: SYSTEM POWERING DOWN IN 30 SECONDS!
Type Ctrl-C to cancel shutdown sequence and return to ok prompt.
Note that cancelling the shutdown sequence may defeat the purpose
of the environmental monitor and irreparably damage the system!
Powering off.

Cause

Suspected component

1, Two Fans are bad.

2, I/O board is failed (rule out any fan tray issue before replacing the io board)

It would be unusual for 2 components to fail at the same time, unless one previous fan tray failure went unnoticed. However, some unclean data center environments are prone to fan failure. The i/o fan trays receive power from the i/o board, so both of these FRUs may be suspect.

Solution

Gather the following information from ok prompt

From ok prompt:

ok > probe-scsi-all

Is System detecting disks or showing no hostid ? If no disks or hostid are detected, this can be further indication of an IO board issue.  The IO board is more difficult to replace, and this should be taken into account in troubleshooting.

.env

From RSC:

rsc>  version -v
rsc>  environment
rsc>  loghistory
rsc>  consolehistory

Recommendation is to dispatch:

x2 540-3615 [F] - PCI Fan Tray

x1 501-6524 [F] - I/O Board for the V880

Action Plan

1.- Physically inspect fan tray and replace Fan Tray as required.

power on the system.

From ok prompt gather and check the temperature and IO Fan Tray status.

ok  .env

Check if any other fan tray message appear after Fan Tray replacement.

2.- If system is unable to boot up. and Both fan trays are marked as failed again.

Replace IO Board

501-6524 [F]
