Applies to:

Sun Enterprise 450 Server - Version All Versions to All Versions [Release All Releases]
Oracle Solaris on SPARC (64-bit)

Symptoms

The server reports a fan failure that appears to be related to a power supply and then the server shuts down.

WARNING: Power supply fan 1 failure detected
Environmental monitor is authorized to shut down your system.
WARNING: Fan Fail is 0xfd retries = 3
WARNING: PS Fan Number 1 Failed
WARNING Fan Failure(s), System shutdown.

Cause

Although one can assume that the power supply would contain the faulty fan in question, this is not the case.  This fault actually involves a fan on the disk fan assembly.  The disk fan assembly serves both the disks and the power supplies.

Solution

If a server has experienced a shutdown due to this fault, please open a service request with Oracle Support.

If the fault has been confirmed, the disk fan assembly should be replaced.
