Symptoms

After shutdown of the operating sytem and upon attempt to start the update of the System Firmware,
an error is displayed, indicating that the firmware update is in progress:

sc> flashupdate -v
Error: SC flash update in progress.
sc>

At this stage, it's not possible to poweron the server, nor to reset the system controller:

sc> poweron
Host poweron failed.
poweron error: Flash in progress
sc>

sc> resetsc
Are you sure you want to reset the SC (y/n)? y
Performing hard reset on the SC failed
resetsc: Flash in progress
sc>

Cause

The current firmware of the System Controller is most likely in a hung or buggy state which doesn't allow to complete the firmware upgrade.

Solution

To resolve the problem,

1. Powercycle the server by removing the power cords from the server's power supplies for ca. 2 minutes.

2. if available, attach a serial console to the server's Serial Management Port

3. plug back the power cords

4. watch the System Controller's POST output on the serial console

5. if the System Controller completes it's POST without problems, log in again and try the firmware update again.

6. if the System Controller POST indicates an error or if there is no error during POST, but if the next attempt to update the
system firmware fails again, please open a service request at Oracle
