Symptoms

Lengthy delay during reboot of zfs appliance with message such as :

"The action could not be completed because the appliance is in the process of discovering available shares in storage pool '<pool name>'.
This discovery process can take some time. Once it is completed, you will be able to browse projects and shares within the pool."

where <pool_name> relates to a pool in the appliance.

Changes

Reboot of ZFS appliance.

Increase in number of snapshots since last reboot.

Cause

An increase of the number of configured shares and snapshots is likely to cause this.

In one particular instance, it was seen that a delay of 15 minutes occured when the system had 20000 snapshots defined.

Solution

There is no problem here - this is expected behaviour if the symptoms are only present during a reboot.

Reducing the number of snapshots available will reduce the time taken for this process.

The explanation is that nas cache takes some time to read ZFS properties from the kernel and file information from the kernel into AKD address space.

This is a known issue that comes with the design of AKD and that will be addressed by engineering in some further project consisting of keeping the
nas cache layer into the kernel and reading directly dataset properties in the kernel.
