Symptoms

When trying to create a hardware mirror for the internal disks on M3000 platform or other OPL servers, raidctl command may fail with the below message:

# raidctl
Controller: 0
Disk: 0.0.0
Disk: 0.1.0

# raidctl -c c0t0d0 c0t1d0
Creating RAID volume will destroy all data on spare space of member disks, proceed (yes/no)? yes
Too many arrays.

# raidctl -C "0.0.0 0.1.0" 0
Creating RAID volume will destroy all data on spare space of member disks, proceed (yes/no)? yes
Too many arrays.

Cause

Earlier versions of the M3000 that shipped with processor speeds of less than 2.86Ghz did not come with the on board LSI controller enabled for hardware raid.

While the M4000/5000's come with the on board LSI controller for hardware raid, hardware raid is not supported on M4000/5000's.

The M8000/9000 line uses an optional pci card for hardware raid.  If it is not installed, then you will also get the same type of error message.

Solution

Check your system's prtdiag or showhardconf on the M3000 to see what processor speed you have installed.  If it is not 2.86Ghz, then you must use a software raid option such as zfs, Solaris Volume Manager or a 3rd party option to accomplish your mirroring needs.

On the M8000/M9000 platforms, check showhardconf to see if you have the IOU3A card installed.  The part number will show as 371-5000.  If you have one installed, then you can use hardware raid. If you do not, then you can either use software raid options mentioned above or purchase the IOU3A option card.

Note: IOUA3 may also be referred to as IOUA Type 2 or RAID capable IOUA.

Caution- Before installing the RAID-Capable IOUA Card - verify that your server satisfies all requirements for that IO card.   Supported Oracle Solaris OS and Minimum Patch Requirements are shown in Doc ID 1401119.1
