Symptoms

The server hangs during post with a timeout related error:

JAN 08 10:11:19 ERROR: POST timed out. Not all system components tested. |-->always here

Cause

The following tests shoud be performed, in order to isolate the faulted hardware ( possible memory or system board issue )

  • check that the memory population rules are satisfied:
DIMMS must be installed in sets of 8. Two basic memory configurations are supported: 8-DIMM or 16-DIMM. All DIMMs must have identical capacity. An 8 DIMM configuration fully populates Rank 0 slots.
  • set keyswitch as normal:
 sc> setkeyswitch normal
  • set diag-level as min and reset-all:
sc> setsc diag_level min
ok reset-all
  • power cycle the server.
  • boot in minimum hardware configuration (rank 0 DIMM sockets populated)and then swap, rank 0 with rank 1 DIMMs and retest.

The situation I faced, is slightly different from the one described by:

Netra T5220: ERROR: POST timed out. Not all system components tested. (Doc ID 1374487.1)

Looking at the firmware levels :

show /HOST

Properties:
autorestart = reset
autorunonerror = false
bootfailrecovery = poweroff
bootrestart = none
boottimeout = 0
hypervisor_version = Hypervisor 1.10.0.a 2011/07/15 11:50
macaddress = 00:14:4f:ac:01:66
maxbootfail = 3
obp_version = POST 4.28.10 2008/07/12 13:08
post_version = unknown
send_break_action = (Cannot show property)
status = Unknown
sysfw_version = Sun System Firmware 7.4.0.d 2011/08/10 15:20

While the showhost command does not show firmware issues:

sc> showhost
Sun-Fire-T2000 System Firmware 6.7.12  2011/07/06 20:03

Host flash versions:
   OBP 4.30.4.d 2011/07/06 14:29
   Hypervisor 1.7.3.c 2010/07/09 15:14
   POST 4.30.4.b 2010/07/09 14:24

Solution

Recommended Action:

Open a service request by one of the following methods:

Use My Oracle Support to open the service request using active CSI# for the system.

Call Oracle directly using 1-800-223-1711 and follow prompts to open the service request

For the Technical Service Engineers: if the above tests fail, replace the motherboard
