Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

An attempt to upgrade firmware from 06.x to 07.x using the Sun StorageTek 6000 Array Firmware Upgrade Utility fails. The status of the array is "Not Upgradeable". The Upgrade Utility reports the following error:

  • Event log verification error. You cannot upgrade the storage array until the problem is resolved. Contact your technical support representative to resolve this issue. Event log issues: Too many destination driver events.

Cause

The Firmware Upgrade Utility checks the status of the array before it will allow the upgrade to 7.x to proceed. If the Major Event Log contains too many errors, it will report a "Not Upgradeable" status and the upgrade will fail.

For arrays which are running 06.60.11.11 firmware or below AND contain 750Gb Seagate SATA drives, you may be affected by firmware <BUG 15414220> which fills the MEL with excessive check conditions.

Solution

  1. If the array is running 06.60.11.11 or below AND contains 750Gb Seagate SATA drives, use CAM to upgrade firmware to 06.60.22.10 which resolves <Bug 15414220>. This will stop the excessive check conditions logging to the MEL.

  2. Clear the MEL using the following CAM CLI command :
    service -d <arrayname> -c reset -t mel
    Location for `service`command :

    Solaris : /opt/SUNWsefms/bin/
    Linux : /opt/sun/cam/private/fms/bin/
    Windows : C:\Program Files\Sun\Common Array Manager\Component\fms\bin\
  3. Use the Firmware Upgrade Utility to check the status of the array and proceed with upgrade.
