Symptoms

Repeated T10000C drive FSC 5164 errors in acsss_event.log during dismount, like this:

2013-10-08 20:10:36 DISMOUNT[0]:
2146 I mt_action_dm.c 1 424
Fault Symptom Code (FSC) 5164 reported when dismounting volume D20388 from
drive 0, 5, 1, 9.

The FSC5164 may not be logged in the Error Warn Info Event log because the issue is on the data path.

Backup application event log may show perm errors during load or label operations.

Changes

No known change in the system.

Cause

According to the FSC 5164 description, the problem may be a dirty reader, a failed reader, bad media,
or bad channel electronics including connectors.

Solution

1. Get a drive dump and have an L2 Tape support engineer analyze it.
If the T10000C drive is not at the latest code level, upgrade drive code.
2. Unload the tape by issuing a dismount force command from the library management software (ACSLS or HSC) or from the backup application.
3. Load a cleaning tape in the drive.
4. Dismount the cleaning tape.
5. Test a couple of mount and dismount operation on the drive.
6. If the drive fails the load operation again, replace the drive.
