Symptoms

This problem occurs when the hard disk is operating properly, but it's OK LED is turned off.  The Service manual indicates:

Hard Drive LEDs
Activity green   • On – Drive is receiving power. Solidly lit if drive is idle.
                    • Flashing – The drive is processing a command.
                    • Off – Power is off

The output of 'format' command shows the properly operational disk:

From Alom, the disk LED appears to be normal:

If you have any concern regarding disk health, you can follow the document:

Cause

Probable causes are:

  1. A faulty or poorly seated disk (or it's lightpipe),
  2. An I2C bus problem which travels from the system board through the PDB to the disk backplane.

Solution

The order of resolution would be to (stop once resolved since most likely solutions listed first):

  1. Reseat the disk,
  2. Inspect the PDB to system board & PDB to disk backplane ribbon cables for seating & damage,
  3. Replace the disk,
  4. Replace the disk bacplane FRU(s),
  5. Replace the PDB,
  6. Replace the ALOM / SP,
  7. Replace the Ribbon Cables,
  8. Replace the system board.
