Symptoms

While initializing an iSCSI LUN on a Windows client, we may sometimes encounter the following error reported in the system event log:

VDS fails to write boot code on a disk during clean operations Error code 80070017@02070008
Data Error (Cyclic Redundancy Error)

Cause

There are several conditions that may cause this issue:

  • Disk issue
  • Windows discovery policy that determines whether a newly discovered disk is to be configured online or remain offline
  • Quota set on configured LUN

In this specific case, Customer had set Quota on project TRWIN  to 6 TB

NAME                                             AVAIL   USED  USEDSNAP  USEDDS  USEDREFRESERV  USEDCHILD
pool-0/local/TRWIN                                 0    6.00T         0   53.0K              0      6.00T          <<<<  Project TRWIN
pool-0/local/TRWIN/site_PDMWvault                  0     387G         0    387G              0          0
pool-0/local/TRWIN/test_lun                        0    63.4K         0   63.4K              0          0
pool-0/local/TRWIN/test_lun2                       0    63.4K         0   63.4K              0          0
pool-0/local/TRWIN/trwindata_apps_scratch          0     849G         0    849G              0          0
pool-0/local/TRWIN/trwindata_groups                0    1.82T         0   1.82T              0          0
pool-0/local/TRWIN/user2                           0    1004G         0   1004G              0          0
pool-0/local/TRWIN/user_home                       0     469G         0    469G              0          0
pool-0/local/TRWIN/users1                          0    1.23T         0   1.23T              0          0
........

Since Thin Provisioning was enabled,  the customer was allowed to create an additional LUN.

However, there was insufficient space on project TRWIN - due to the quota being exceeded - so, the system declined the initialization of the new LUN -> generating the Data Error (Cyclic Redundancy Error)

Solution

Disk issue:

Unmap the iscsi lun on  the ZFS-SA Appliance , Remap them and check, If issue persist

Windows discovery policy that determines whether a newly discovered disk is to be configured online or remain offline:

For the windows client, check the recommendation posted in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article - to enable the offlined disk to clear the read only flag if set.

         http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;971436

Quota set on configured LUN:

Check the quotas of any projects or shares.  If there is no quota, or the quota cannot be changed, then destroy any unused shares or snapshots to free up space and try again.
