Symptoms

SIM 1 has been replaced, but the status of it is still unknown:

chassis-008  1237FMD02B       ok        Sun Microsystems, Inc.  Sun Disk Shelf (SAS-2)    1237FMD02B
slot-000     SIM 0            ok        Sun Microsystems, Inc.  3753633                   2029QTF-1227QC13E9
slot-001     SIM 1            ok        Sun Microsystems, Inc.  unknown                   unknown

Thinking that the SIM might have been DOA, a new SIM was been sent.

But, status of SIM1 is still the same (unknown):

chassis-008  1237FMD02B       ok        Sun Microsystems, Inc.  Sun Disk Shelf (SAS-2)    1237FMD02B
slot-000     SIM 0            ok        Sun Microsystems, Inc.  3753633                   2029QTF-1227QC13E9
slot-001     SIM 1            ok        Sun Microsystems, Inc.  unknown                   unknown

Cause

Possible causes

Broken/flaky SAS cables:

The customer needs to check if the cables that are connected to the affected SIM are working properly

If they seem to be flaky or damaged, they need to be replaced

SIM connectors on the JBOD centerplane might be damaged (maybe a bent pin)

If this is the case, the whole JBOD needs to be replaced

System needs to be powercycled in order to recognize the new SIM (this is the most likely cause of this problem)

Solution

Follow these steps, one by one:

1. Check the cables and confirm that there is no flaky cable

2. Check the SIM connectors on the JBOD centerplane

3. If all the above are ok, power-cycle the appliance (not just rebooting, but complete powercycle)

        Reboot: stop /SYS, start /SYS, start /SP/console

Powercycle: reboot + removing the cables from the appliance, shut down the affected JBOD, wait 2-3 minutes, insert the cables, start the arrays, start the appliance
