Provide a possible reason for Hardware Management Daemon (hwmgmtd) not being able to report Storage details

***Checked for relevance on 13-Feb-2015***

Symptoms

On a Sparc T4-4 with attached Fibrechannel Storage, running Solaris 11.1 and Oracle Hardware Management Pack 2.2.5 (OHMP) the command "hwmgmtcli list storage --details" returned "NOT AVAILABLE" for most of the "storage report" details:

/opt/sun-ssm/sbin# ./hwmgmtcli list storage --details

=== storage report ===
Storage Health: NOT AVAILABLE
Storage Health Details: NOT AVAILABLE
Installed Disk Size: NOT AVAILABLE
Installed Disks: 2
Max Disks: 8
Disk Controllers: NOT AVAILABLE
Logical Volumes: NOT AVAILABLE

  • Hardware management daemon was running, other reports (server report, cooling report...) contained valid data
  • OHMP command "ilomconfig list interconnect" as well as ILOM command "show /SP/network/interconnect" listed a working SP-to-Host interconnect
  • ILOM Storage Monitoring reported "Comprehensive System monitoring is not available":
/System/Storage
   Properties:
       health = Not Available
       health_details = Comprehensive System monitoring is not available.
                        Ensure the host is running with the Hardware
                        Management Pack. For download details go to

       installed_disks = 2
       max_disks = 8
       installed_disk_size = Not Available
       logical_volumes = Not Available
       disk_controllers = Not Available

Cause

The QLOGIC SANsurfer CLI (Package QLScli, Version:  1.7.3) was installed on the System.
OHMP queried the Storage devices using the command "/opt/QLogic_Corporation/SANsurferCLI/scli -i all" which sent several commands to each Fibrechannel LUN.
Some of these commands took longer time to return output which caused a timeout resulting in storage details not being reported.

Solution

As workaround, OHMP was stopped from using the "scli" command to query the Storage Devices by renaming the command (/opt/QLogic_Corporation/SANsurferCLI/scli).

Solution was to upgrade to OHMP 2.2.7 (Patch 17256098, "Oracle Hardware Management Pack 2.2.7 for Oracle Solaris 11") which uses scli command options that do not
cause a timeout.

The timeout issue was identified by trussing the command "/opt/sun-ssm/private/fwrxmldiff < /dev/null > /tmp/tree.xml (used to gather information by hwmgmtd).
The command returned an empty "
tmp/tree.xml" as long as scli was active under OHMP 2.2.5.
