Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

system may hang during boot with the following messages:

WARNING: timeout: reset target chno = 0 targ = 0
WARNING: ATAPI drv, target: 0, reset failed but continuing
WARNING: timeout: reset bus chno = 0 targ = 0
WARNING: ata_controller - Set features failed
....
WARNING: timeout: reset target chno = 0 targ = 0
WARNING: ATAPI drv, target: 0, reset failed but continuing
WARNING: timeout: reset bus chno = 0 targ = 0
WARNING: ata_controller - Set features failed

Cause

This behavior has been noticed in particular after installing/upgrading s10u6.

The "timeout: reset target chno = 0 targ = 0" message indicates that the atapi code is resetting the hardware

There are some bugs related to this like:

6870382 system hung at uata layer after 138324-03 installation using Toshiba DVD SD-C2732
6627545 atapi dvd timeout reset can trigger pci target aborts and fatal pci errors/BERRs.

Solution

The following are the steps to follow in order to solve the issue:

1. A power-cycle does seem to fix the problem until the next reboot.
This can be used as step to move away from booting hangs

2. As always in order to avoid any SW contamination of the issue Firmware updated to the latest version and recent UATA patch are necessary
    See Firmware Download and update procedure for Sun Fire[TM] v1280, 3800, 4800, 4810, 6800, E2900, E4900, E6900, and Netra 1280, 1290 systems. (Doc ID 1006281.1)

Sun CR: 6870382 ==> Oracle BugID: 15581706   is fixed in 144573-01
Sun CR: 6627545 ==> Oracle BugID: 15437144   is fixed in 136891-01

NOTE: installing the latest version of that patches is suggested

If problem persist

3. Replace the DVD-ROM

If problem persist after replacing the DVD-ROM, and the server is prevented from booting, and the server is remote and cannot be power-cycled without a special site visit:

4. Disable the DVD-ROM by removing the driver.

Perform a power-cycle of the server.
This will allow you to boot it.

Enter the following line into /etc/system and reboot (or edit the /etc/system file manually and reboot)
    # echo "exclude: drv/uata" >> /etc/system
    # reboot

Since the DVD-ROM drive is the only ATAPI device in the server, nothing else will be affected.
The line in /etc/system can be removed later on, when the problem is fixed.

Worth mentioning that the DVD is an IDE (ATAPI) device and cannot be seen at ok prompt using probe-scsi-all command.
probe-ide command does not exist on this platforms.

To view the DVD device at the ok prompt you need the 'show-children' command.
See Sun Fire [TM] V1280/E2900, Netra 1280/1290 System: Simulating probe-ide (Doc ID 1006345.1)
