Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

  • UltraSparc T2 systems report memory errors on non-existent DIMM slot D2 or D3,
There are not D2 or D3 FB DIMM slot on the UltraSparc T2 systems

For Example:

ERROR: MB/CMP0/BR0/CH0/D3 initialization failed

or

ERROR: MB/CMP0/BR0/CH1/D2 initialization failed

  • UltraSparc T2 systems report memory errors on a DIMM slot that is not populated

For Example:

Sun Netra T5220, No Keyboard
Copyright (c) 1998, 2011, Oracle and/or its affiliates. All rights reserved.
OpenBoot 4.33.0.b, 16256 MB memory available, Serial #9562xxxx.
Ethernet address 0:21:28:xx:xx:xx, Host ID: 85xxxxxx.

ERROR: The following devices are disabled:
MB/CMP0/BR3/CH0/D1
MB/CMP0/BR3/CH1/D1

-> show /SP/faultmgmt/
/SP/faultmgmt
Targets:
shell
0 (/SYS/MB/CMP0/BR3/CH0/D1)
1 (/SYS/MB/CMP0/BR3/CH1/D1)

-> show /SYS/MB/CMP0/BR3/CH1/D1
show: Invalid target /SYS/MB/CMP0/BR3/CH1/D1

  • The DIMM errors could be detected by POST
  • DIMM errors with the wrong slot may also be reported by Solaris FMA
  • Platform system firmware is below 7.4.2

Cause

Likely there is/are faulty DIMMs on the system ,but the system is misreporting the actual location
of the the suspect DIMMs due to the following documented bugs.

BUG 15672434 - SUNBT6988929-1.10.X Wrong DIMM faulted
BUG 15733557 - SUNBT6988929-1.10.1 Wrong DIMM faulted

Solution

1) Apply UltraSparc T2 System Firmware 7.4.2 or higher

Sun SPARC T5210 - Patch 147307-04 (or higher)
Sun SPARC T5220 - Patch 147307-04 (or higher)
Sun Blade T6320 - Patch 147308-03 (or higher)
Netra T5220     - Patch 147309-04 (or higher)
Sun Netra CP 3260 - Patch 144609-07 (or higher)

2) After updating the platform firmware as described in STEP 1, try to power on the system so that the faulty DIMMs may be recorded by the service processor on the correct slot.

3) Collect a System/ILOM snapshot and proceed to create a HW service request to resolve the memory dimm issue.
