Rack PDU Network auto negotiate issues - Document created using inputs from Exadata Email Alias resource .

Symptoms

While connecting the Rack PDU management Ethernet port to a switch, The auto negotiated speed is 10M/Half.
Even after configuring to 100M/Full at switch side, the connection cannot be established.

Cause

Rack PDU/ Firmware Design.

The RM-I (PDU) supports both, 10/100 Full Duplex and 10/100 Half Duplex but not auto-negotiation as defined in IEEE802.3u.
The RM Module uses “Parallel Detection” which means it just looks, what is offered on the other side and uses it.
If the other port is on “auto negotiation”, than the procedure below  will most likely result in a half-duplex mode.
This can be avoided, if the switch port is also configured as 100BaseT-full duplex.

The solution to this issue is to "Force" speed & Duplex to 100 Full Duplex on the switch port

Solution

The PDU does not  have an option to force 100M/Full  from Management  interface.

If the PDU is set to an incorrect Network Speed /Duplex Setting, PDU requires a reset to auto-negotiate again.

To set the auto negotiated Network speed on  Exadata PDU management Ethernet port from 10M/Half to 100M/Full

Steps Required :-

a) Disconnect the network cable from the Switch Port.

b) Reset the PDU as follows:

i. Press and hold the reset button until you see a five-second countdown displayed on the LCD screen (see PDU Metering Unit LCD Screen and Reset Button). You must press the reset button for 20 seconds before the five-second countdown begins.

ii. During the five-second countdown, release the reset button and then tap the button again to force the metering unit to reset.

( Refer - Sun Rack II Power Distribution Unit User's Guide )

c) While resetting, plug the  network cable into desired switch port.  Upon boot up it should connect at 100M/Full.
