Sun Virtual Library Extension (VLE) - Version 1.0 to 1.3 [Release 1.0]
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

Both UUI ports fail when a single UUI port fails or one of the UUI port cables is disconnected.

Cause

It is common practice to configure VLE UUI ports with both a primary and alternate UUI port.

However, if both UUI ports are within the same subnet then the failure of either port or cable removal from either UUI port can result in the remaining UUI port becoming inoperative.  This is reproducible in our labs and there is no fix planned to address this behavior.  Solaris documentation recommends against this configuration unless the ports are configured for IPMP.  However, VLE engineering has not tested IPMP on the VLE UUI ports and therefore this option is not recommended.

Solution

There are two options available for addressing this issue:

  1. Configure the UUI ports on separate subnets.  This may also necessitate the use of a second gateway and VLAN.
  2. Use port aggregation on the two UUI ports.  To use this option the switch to which the UUI ports connect must support port aggregation.
