The Chassis Serial Number (CSN) is used by the Appliance System Software in a number of ways. The CSN relates to the Chassis of the NAS head and problems with the Service Processor (SP) software can cause zeros to be reported and even UI (BUI or CLI ) difficulties with messages such as "no such chassis". An incorrect CSN can also lead to Phone Home services not working.
Please note that if the CSN is missing then a cluster peer that is rebooted will not join cluster (Applicable to Clustered Appliances only ).
Addtionally when the CSN displays as 'unknown', disk replacements which were successful in the OS may fail to trigger a ZFS replace. This is because akd does not recognize the new disk (unknown-x) as being the same as the old disk (CSN-x). For troubleshooting resilvers failing to start please see - https://stbeehive.oracle.com/teamcollab/wiki/AmberRoadSupport:TSG%20Storage#Disk+failure.2FResilvering+.3A+Data+drive
To confirm if your CSN is reporting correctly check the Chassis Serial Number/CSN field is not all 0s ( 0000000000 ): From the CLI -
:> configuration version get csn
From the BUI -
Click on the Sun/Oracle icon on the top left of the BUI.
CauseCertain conditions ( most commonly SP memory leak bugs in older 2.x SP code or FRU replacements ) can sometimes cause the CSN information to be lost from the SP.
This can cause the CSN to report all 0's. SolutionPlease contact Oracle Support for further assistance.
Oracle Support personal can perform a procedure to recover the CSN.
TSC should use the following procedure to recover the CSN -
