Trace grows by 1GB every hour and taking all of diagnostics disk space

Created from <SR 3-7259432511>

Applies to:

Exadata Database Machine X2-2 Half Rack - Version All Versions and later
Oracle Database - Enterprise Edition - Version 11.2.0.3 and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.
In original case, the trace was always produced by FBDA background process

Symptoms

You have an Exadata RACK that has recently been upgraded to RDBMS version : 11.2.0.3 BP 15 or higher.

Many traces are now generated by the FBDA (Flashback Data Archiver) process, sometimes at the rate of 1GB per hour.

You attempt to disable the functionality using DROP FLASHBACK ARCHIVE, but still the alert log shows the background process restarting:

"Restarting dead background process FBDA"

Changes

Applied 11.2.0.3 Bundle Patch 15 or higher to environment.

Cause

Bug 16857847 - FBDA PROCESS GENERATES HUGE GES RELATED TRACES

Development has determined this is a problem in normal RAC GES queue status checks, but the FBDA process should not be generating a trace.

Solution

There is an interim patch on top of 11.2.0.3 Bundle Patch 17 available in MOS Patches & Updates under Patch 16857847.

If the fix is not available for your Bundle Patch level, it will be necessary to request backport via Service Request to Support.

NOTE:  this issue does not occur in 11.2.0.4 patchset or 12.1 versions.

You can use the following Workarounds:

1) Disable flashback archive functionality using DROP FLASHBACK ARCHIVE and ensure no tables were set to use functionality.

Oracle® Database Advanced Application Developer's Guide 11g Release 2 (11.2) E25518-06
Chapter 12 - Using Oracle Flashback Technology / Section "Enabling and Disabling Flashback Data Archive"

2) Restart the database to eliminate the FBDA background process.
