Applies to:

Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud X2-2 Hardware - Version X2 and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

When the ethernet ports (connectors 0A or 1A) of the Infiniband Gateway switch (nm2-gw) are connected to an external switch such as cisco,  messages  "THRESHOLD_VIOLATION" are reported in cisco switch.

Changes

Connection between cisco switch and the nm2-gw switch is using an MPO cable with a 10Gbps QDR QSFP transceiver at the Gateway Switch.

Cause

This is due to an incompatibility of the transceiver used at the Gateway Switch and the external cisco switch.   The QSFP+ transceiver module used on the GW can in rare cases exceed the max input optical power of the SFP+ transceiver on the Cisco switch.  There is no risk of permanent damage and no issues reported regarding link integrity.  Oracle has changed the QSFP+ transceiver module recently to fix the issue (reduced optical output power spec).  So, the solution to the customer is to replace this transceiver.

Solution

The tranceiver installed on the customer's Gateway Switch that gives these messages may be the following:

Avago    AFBR-79E4Z

The model/manufacturer that is expected not to cause issues is :

Oracle Part#: 135-1204-01 Rev 51
TE Connectivity 2156055-1

Both these have the same Oracle PN (Option): 2124A.

So, as a solution, replace the transceiver with the new transceiver (part#135-1204-01 Rev 51, option 2124A, TE Connectivity 2156055-1. ).  Customers may open a case with Oracle Support to get this replaced.

Note: AVAGO AFBR-79EIDZ-OR1 is being purged and will not be available in the future
