Applies to:

StorageTek Tape Analytics - Version 1.0 to 1.0.2 [Release 1.0]
Sun StorageTek SL8500 Modular Library System - Version Not Applicable to Not Applicable [Release N/A]
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

SL8500’s will change their EngineID values when upgrading code to 8.x or above from a code level lower than 8.

STA will no longer communicate with the SL8500 or SL3000 as it previously used the engineiD as part of that SNMP communication.

Changes

Upgrading SL8500 code to 8.x or above from a code level lower than 8.

Cause

This change will affect any STA accounts if it has been configured at the lower level of code and then moves to 8.x+.

BackGround:

This change was requested by STA engineering and the SL8500 engineering team have fixed the EngineID to something related to the Serial number of the SL8500. This will remain at this setting for the foreseeable future.

Example 2013 05 22          SL8500  code level 8.07

SL8500> snmp engineid print

                    EngineID                 Serial

Lib 1   0x80001f880436303030333030333133    516000300313

Lib 2   0x80001f880436303030333030333135    516000300315

Lib 3   0x80001f880436303030323030373238    516000200728

Lib 4   0x80001f880436303030323031323833    516000201283

EngineID’s are now 30 bytes and based on the machine serial number.

Solution

This change was asked for by STA engineering and they produced changes to the STA documentation to cope with the changes as follows:

There are changes that need to be done to remedy this, but there will be no impact or losing STA data as the libraries are managed in STA by serial number not engine ID.

The process to remedy this issue is documented in the STA Data Reference Guide which is available to customers.

Here is the direct link to the HTML page which documents this procedure:

http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E28385_01/en/E28382/html/STA_RefManageSNMP.05.17.htm

Also, the whole manual can also be downloaded from:

http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E28385_01/en/E28382/E28382_03.pdf

Minimum code levels:

SL500 – FRS 1468

SL3000 – FRS 4.x

SL8500 – FRS 8.x
