Symptoms

Solaris 9 host server1 has one Oracle Emulex FC HBA connected to the SAN, accessing several Hitachi arrays.

After reboot, we start to see endless messages like this:

Changes

This has been seen on Solaris 10 after upgrading to 119130-21 or higher.

This has been seen on Solaris 8 and 9 after upgrading to SAN 4.4.11 patch levels.

Cause

Due to some events on the SAN or due to current configuration, it seems these messages

May 21 12:02:32 server1 fctl: [ID 517869 kern.warning] WARNING: 66=>fp(3)::PLOGI to 8cbf00 failed. state=a reason=3.
May 21 12:02:32 server1 fctl: [ID 517869 kern.warning] WARNING: 70=>fp(3)::PLOGI to a8b00 failed. state=a reason=3.

... trigger a software problem on fcp driver, endless errors like this every second, on each fcp instance associated to each HBA port:
