Sun StorageTek SL48 Tape Library - Version All Versions and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

The tape library cannot load/unload tapes or scan barcodes for inventory assessment due to a "Robotic Failure" error.

Error Codes
---------------------------------------------------
"8F 0E Robotic Failure","HE: cannot find slider block - Code: 8F - error during slider init -> get range - Code: 0E"

Updated the library firmware and it is now running H.10 / 3.10e.  However, the same error persists.  When using the RMI and selecting the Status > Inventory tab, the library shows that there is a tape in Drive 1 (tape labeled 000044L4), but the Source is shown as "N.A.", which is strange, because normally it reveals which slot the tape came from.

Cause

 Defective robotic hand module.

Solution

Troubleshooting:
Early firmware versions were not able to use as much force to get or place media in a magazine. Upgrading the Library firmware might resolve this issue.
The current firmware for SL48 is H.10/3.10e
.

The firmware version can be downloaded through MOS --> Patches & Updates --> Search (Number/Name or Bug Number (Simple))--> Write 128439-10 and click on Search Button --> Download

Should the problem persist after upgrading the code, contact the TSC, open a Service Request, reference this Knowledge Entry and provide the Dump/Error log from the SL48.

•If the error consistently happens on the same slot, try different tape cartridges in that slot.
     • If the failure remains with the same slot, the magazine may be at fault.
     • If the failure follows the tape cartridge, the tape cartridge may be at fault.
• If the device is performing an operation that automatically returns a tape cartridge to a certain slot, make sure another tape is not loaded in that slot.
• Run the wellness test.

Replacement chassis has resolved this issue.
