Applies to:

Sun StorageTek Auto Cartridge Sys Lib SW (ACSLS) - Version 7.1 to 8.2 [Release 7.0 to 8.0]
Sun StorageTek SL8500 Modular Library System - Version All Versions and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

CAP is unable to unload all tapes when requested.

The Networker withdraw command (nsrjb -w) is not able to eject all selected tapes. For example, a request to eject 11 tapes resulted to only 7 tapes being ejected - i.e.,  4 tapes ejected to CAP 0,1,0 and 3 tapes ejected to CAP 0,1,1

Changes

New installation

Cause

The NetWorker interface for ACSLS silos assumes that every LSM within an ACS has a local CAP.  The local CAP is used for all export operations when the withdraw command (nsrjb -w) is issued. Some newer libraries, for example, the SL8500, can be configured with a single CAP even though they operate as an ACS with multiple LSMs.   With such libraries attempts to use the withdraw command may result in an error.

Solution

According to EMC Support, the recommended technique for exporting tapes in any ACSLS installation is to first deallocate the volumes from the NetWorker inventory (nsrjb -x) and then to export the volumes using the ACSLS console (or, cmd_proc). This technique is required when using SL8500-class libraries.
