Applies to:

Sun Ultra 45 Workstation - Version Not Applicable and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

A customer may notice that there is excessive fan noise coming from the workstation.  The temperatures in the workstation are otherwise normal.

-bash-3.2$ prtpicl -v | grep Temperature
:Temperature 55
:Temperature 55
:Temperature 44
:Temperature 51
:Temperature 39
:Temperature 61
:Temperature 68
:Temperature 31
:Temperature 38

Cause

The excessive fan noise is due to the CPU fan running constantly at high speed.

-bash-3.2$ prtpicl -v | grep Speed
| NAME=CPU Speed |
| NAME=CPU Speed |
:SpeedUnit rpm
:Speed 21093 <------
:SpeedUnit rpm
:Speed 21093 <------
:SpeedUnit rpm
:Speed 3013
:SpeedUnit rpm
:Speed 3013
:SpeedUnit rpm
:Speed 3013

Solution

The workaround is a patch that requires jumpers on the following system board part numbers: 375-3277 or 375-3278. Attached to this document are the patch installation instructions and the SUNWfanctl.tar binary package which is needed for the installation.

Be aware that also there are these requirements to be checked:
1> picl deamon must be active
2> fanctl deamon/service must be active
example:
 # ps -ef | grep fanctld
 root 5904 1 0 16:18:25 pts/4 0:00 /opt/SUNWfanctl/bin/fanctld
If the process does not show up then need to start manually:
 # /opt/SUNWfanctl/etc/fanctl start
or
 # svcadm enable svc:/platform/fanctld:default

A new version of the environmental control processor firmware was released and deployed in the following system board part numbers: 375-3552-02 ASSY,1X1.6GHZ,0M, 375-3553-02 ASSY,2X1.6GHZ,0M, 375-3556-02 ASSY,OEM,1X1.34GHZ,0M

Jumpers can be sourced by Oracle through the 'No Part Process.' Oracle no longer stocks the kit mentioned in the patch instructions. Simply open a quick task, provide Doc ID 1285688.1 as a reference, and provide information on the parts you are requesting. A description of the patch cables is provided in the patch instructions. If the workaround does not resolve the issue, the system board should be replaced.
