Sun StorageTek SL8500 Modular Library System - Version Not Applicable and later
IBM LTO5 Tape Drive - Version Not Applicable and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

New IBM LTO-5 drive with a Belisarius card takes as long as 30 minutes to come ready when installed into an SL8500.

The SLConsole device icon for the drive remains amber for an extended period.

IBM LTO-5 drives without Belisarius cards do not exhibit this behavior.

Changes

Installed IBM LTO-5 drive with a Belisarius card.

Cause

Microcode timing issue.

Solution

If installing IBM LTO-5 drives with Belisarius cards (Bel encryption cards) in an SL8500, you must verify that the library is running firmware FRS-7.01 or higher.

This is required even if the encryption feature is not being used.

If possible, upgrade the SL8500 firmware the latest firmware.  At the time of this writing it is FRS-8.05 and is the recommended code when running LTO-5 transports.
