Symptoms

Customer attempts to vary a drive/RTD online in MVS and it fails.

Example:

%SLS6684I RTD DC2D0B31 ON VTSS DC2D RETURNED ECAM ERROR CC=5 RC=109
%SLS6627E FAILED TO VARY ONLINE RTD DC2D0B31 ON VTSS DC2D

Cause

A drive going offline in the backup application may not necessarily mean that the drive is faulty.  This status may have been possibly caused by some event on the fiber (data path).

Solution

1. Look for the drive on SL Console.

2. Reboot the drive on SL Console.  This will restart the drive communications.

3. Confirm the drive re-initialized and ejected any previously loaded tape.

4. Attempt to vary the drive online in MVS.  Check Document: MVS/HSC - How to Vary a Drive Online or Offline (Doc ID 1016789.1).

5. Monitor the tape and drive for further issues.

6. Open a Service Request for drive diagnostics should the drive/RTD continue to fail. To gather diagnostic information, check Document: SL500/SL8500/SL3000 - How to Collect Error Log Information Using SL Console (Doc ID 1014228.1).
