Symptoms

In Exalogic Physical 2.0 releases issue of SNMP daemon process crashing with "segfault" errors is observed. Below "segfault" errors are seen in "/var/log/messages" file at the time of the issue.

kernel: snmpd[5375]: segfault at 7fff7c21c000 ip 00007f40ab7d8f89 sp 00007fff7c218e40 error 4 in libnetsnmpmibs.so.10.0.3[7f40ab75f000+167000]

This SNMP crash issue is seen in Exalogic releases 2.0.0.0.0, 2.0.0.0.1, 2.0.0.0.2 & 2.0.0.0.3.

Cause

This issue happens because of known defect 13384355 in Linux SNMP rpm package versions which are older than 5.3.2.2-14.el5. This known defect is fixed in latest SNMP rpm package versions 5.3.2.2-14.el5 and above.

Linux kernel versions part of Exalogic releases 2.0.0.0.0, 2.0.0.0.1, 2.0.0.0.2 & 2.0.0.0.3 use older version of SNMP rpm packages (older than 5.3.2.2-14.el5) which cause SNMPD crash issue. For e.g. in Exalogic version 2.0.0.0.3 we have the SNMP rpm packages of version 5.3.2.2-9.0.1.el5_5.1 as shown in below "rpm -qa" command output:

$ rpm -qa | grep snmp
net-snmp-utils-5.3.2.2-9.0.1.el5_5.1
net-snmp-libs-5.3.2.2-9.0.1.el5_5.1
net-snmp-perl-5.3.2.2-9.0.1.el5_5.1
net-snmp-libs-5.3.2.2-9.0.1.el5_5.1

Solution

To resolve this SNMPD crash issue upgrade to Exalogic January 2013 PSU version 2.0.3.0.1 which has latest SNMP rpm packages which has fix.

Exalogic PSU 2.0.3.0.1 has SNMP rpm packages at version 5.3.2.2-17.0.1.el5 as shown in below "rpm -qa" command output which has fix for SNMPD crash issue.

$ rpm -qa | grep snmp
net-snmp-5.3.2.2-17.0.1.el5
net-snmp-utils-5.3.2.2-17.0.1.el5
net-snmp-libs-5.3.2.2-17.0.1.el5
net-snmp-libs-5.3.2.2-17.0.1.el5
