Symptoms

Xsigod (Xsigo Daemon) does not start on a Linux Host.
When trying to start it manually, the error message "<xsigod> main: device open failed" shows up

Cause

This is a known problem when you have a linux host with OVN Linux host drivers installed, but for some reason either the infiniband HCA card is removed from the host or the host is unable to detect the HCA.

Solution

All the modules appear to load fine, but 'xsigod' fails to start. Here's what you'll see with 'service xsigo status':

[root@popo redhat]# service xsigo status
xsigod is not running
Module vnic is loaded
Module vhba is loaded
Module kxsigod is loaded
Module ib_mthca is loaded
Module xcpm is loaded
Module xsigoib is loaded

When you try to start 'xsigod' you get the following error.

[root@popo redhat]# xsigod
<xsigod> main: device open failed

This is a known problem when you have a linux host with OVN Linux host drivers installed, but for some reason either the infiniband HCA card is removed from the host or the host is unable to detect the HCA.

Run 'lspci' to see if the system detects the HCA. If the HCA is in the system but fails to get detected then contact Oracle Customer Support and request for an RMA of the HCA.
