Symptoms

There is a potential to experience a higher rate of Unrecoverable Media Errors of these disk drives which can affect long term reliability of the product.

Changes

Cause

Disks may fail due to excessive idling at the same track after the drive updates its internal logs in System (non-user) tracks. This issue may be seen on any system that supports the following drives:

Solution

The output of the command iostat -En provides Vendor/Product/Revision/Serial_No.
Caution: It has been observed that this information is sometimes obsolete if the disk has been previously hot-swapped and the system not rebooted.

Explorer output will have a disks/diskinfo file that can be referenced for up to date information after a disk swap.

It is highly recommended to upgrade the disk firmware, increasing the long term reliability and preventing excessive idling on the same sector.

A maintenance window should be planned as disk firmware upgrades require the system be quiesced.  Refer to the individual patch README's for the firmware install procedures.

Note that the latest firmware will not fix an already failing disk, but will remediate the root cause on disks that have not yet failed.

Drives with the base part number of 390-0323 should use the firmware in <SunPatch 124232-04>.
Drives with the base part number of 390-0324 should use the firmware in <SunPatch 124780-03>.
Drives with the base part number of 390-0448 should use the firmware in <SunPatch 128164-09>.
Drives with the base part number of 390-0449 should use the firmware in <SunPatch 140493-08>.
Drives with the base part number of 390-0325 / 390-0327 / 390-0329 should use the firmware in <SunPatch 147108-02>.
Drives with the base part number of 390-0411 should use the firmware in <SunPatch 141468-07>.

Disks may fail due to excessive idling at the same track after the drive updates its internal logs in System (non-user) tracks.  This issue may be seen on any system that supports the drives listed in the attached Drive Firmware Table.
