Symptoms
Problems reported:
- Unable to upgrade HP LTO5 drive firmware using SCSI Toolbox.
- Unable to downgrade HP LTO5 drive firmware using SCSI Toolbox.
- Unable to pull any relevant drive log information.
Host environment:
- Linux host running Quantum's StorNext Storage Manager application.
- StorNext host is directly attached to the library.
- The library is an SL3000 with FC interface enabled.
Note:
1. Another SL3000 library ( with HP LTO5 drives ) controlled by NetBackup does not have any issues with drive code upgrade using the SCSI Toolbox.
2. This problem may affect other SCSI/FC tape drives.
Changes
Problem happened during drive code upgrade.
Cause
Persistent SCSI reservation set by host application to the drives.
Solution
1. If code upgrade using SCSI toolbox fails, try upgrading the drives using:
a. A firmware update tape.
b. Upgrade the drives from the host using the drive vendor's library and tape tool.
2. If the drives were upgraded successfully using any of the methods above, the application vendor should be involved. The application vendor should
verify if their application is setting persistent scsi reservation to the drive and if the reservation is not being released after the drive is used.
3. If all drives cannot be upgraded through any means, have the Field engineer send the drive to engineering for analysis.
4. If only one drive is having the problem, replace the drive.
