Sun StorageTek SL3000 Modular Library System - Version Not Applicable and later
Sun StorageTek SL8500 Modular Library System - Version Not Applicable and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.

This issue applies to the SL8500 library also.

Symptoms

SL3000 Drive(1,1,4,1,4) failed; can’t run jobs.

Large number of RC_6441 “rewindUnload FAILED - drive is loaded” are seen in logs with multiple carts and drives from attached SL3000 (FRS_3.60) with HP LTO3 drives.

2012-11-01T06:54:30.755, 1.1.3.1.3, root, scsi0, move, 2315401, error, 3955, "Error from device Code: 601 - Drive is loaded", Data=<response sequence="127734" final="true"><command>rewindUnload</command><result identifier="1"><resultStatus><resultSeverity>error</resultSeverity><resultCode>6441</resultCode><resultText><!|CDATA|drive 1,1,3,1,3: rewindUnload FAILED - drive is loaded (cartLabel = )||></resultText><operationalState>601</operationalState></resultStatus></result></response>

2012-11-01T06:54:30.780, 1.1.3.1.3, root, scsi0, move, 2315401, error, 1107, "Drive not unloaded for fetch - on rewindUnload"

NBU parameter "MEDIA_UNMOUNT_DELAY" has already been changed to 1200 secs.

Result code 6441, RC6441

Cause

Can not find any problem in drive and library.

Host does not send rewind/unload before dismount.

Solution

Library Snapshot HBT trace helped to verify problem and concluded that drive has NOT received rewind/unload command from host before dismounting cart.

The below events are evidence for RC_6441.
1. Received load request                                                                                       2012-11-01T06:34:59.988192, drive-drv-10, load: requested
2. Cart was put on drive                                                                                         2012-11-01T06:35:18.143391, drive-drv-10, drive 1,1,3,1,3: load Successful
3. Cart was inserted in drive                                                                                  2012-11-01T06:35:18.182346, drive-drv-10, Drive State Monitor Handler: oldState = loaded, newState = loaded, present = 1, success = 1, resultCode = 0,            oldStateCommError = 0
4. LIBRARY RECEIVED DISMOUNT REQUEST FROM HOST                          2012-11-01T06:49:41.314569, drive-drv-10, rewindUnload non-force: requested
5.Get error. No rewind/unload command are received from host.                        2012-11-01T06:54:30.012275, drive-drv-10, drive 1,1,3,1,3: rewindUnload FAILED - drive is loaded (cartLabel = )

Correct order:
1. Received load request

2. Cart was put on drive

3. Cart was inserted in drive

4. Received rewind command from host

5. Rewinding

6. Completed rewind Ready to dismount cart

7. Stopped on loaded

8. Received unload command from host

9. Unloading

10. Cart was ejected

11. Completed rewind/unload

Ready to dismount cart

This is not a hardware issue and needs to be addressed with the software application.

Note:

We did experience the same issue in parent SR 3-7847578921 collab SR 3-7892665091.
Customer environment is a NBU and problem was solved by NBU Server accessing Drives in SL3000 has its 'Media Unmount Timer Delay' setting at 600secs (The NBU recommendation) not 180secs the default.
