Sun StorageTek SL8500 Modular Library System - Version Not Applicable and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

Capacity Keys not Grandfathered with a Microcode Upgrade Above 7.0x.

All of my library panels are gone.
The library control software says there are no tapes in the library.

Changes

Microcode Upgrade Above 7.0x.

Cause

Reports of capacity validation not moving forward (grandfathering) to 7.x or above microcode.  In these cases, customers were required to go to the Oracle eDelivery website and download capacity keys.

Solution

Customers were required to go to the Oracle eDelivery website and download capacity keys.

It might be helpful to have the capacity keys downloaded prior to an upgrade in case there is a problem.  Remember that YOU WILL NEED capacity keys if any eDelivery key, such as Partitioning, is installed. Installing any key takes the SL8500 out of "grandfathered" mode and locks down all eDelivery installed features.  If any of the following keys are installed, the library will enter "Oracle Lockdown" state:

  • Oracle StorageTek SL8500 Hardware Activation File for Dual TCP/IP
  • Oracle StorageTek SL8500 Hardware Activation File for Multi TCP/IP
  • Oracle StorageTek SL8500 Hardware Activation File for Partitioning
  • Any Capacity Key

All feature keys are posted with library microcode on the SAC.  These are available in an emergency but are never to be used to enable a feature that was not already in use by the customer.

Excerpt from the 7.0x, 7.7x and 8.0x Release Notes that details this exposure:

SILKs Licenses
In the customer library, there should not be any SILKs licenses installed, though partitioning and Redundant Electronics may have been enabled via CLI.

Partitioning and Redundant Electronics Licenses
When upgrading to 7.01+, the partitioning and redundant electronics licenses should be grand-fathered. The library must come up with these licenses if they were enabled before the upgrade and the license will then be in the oracle Converted state.

Capacity License

Since there was no concept of a capacity license before 7.01, after the upgrade the maximum capacity license of 15,000 will be given automatically. However, as soon as any Oracle hardware  Activation file is installed via SLConsole, the capacity will be in the oracle Locked Down state. During this state, if the new hardware Activation file is not for capacity, the capacity becomes 0 and the library will be offline.  It will remain 0 until the new capacity hardware Activation file is installed in the library
