Symptoms

Drive Tray Power Tool Problem with HP LTO Drives.

When an HP LTO drive tray is powered on with the Drive Power-up Tool the Drive will not enable the fibre port.

Cause

The drive will not enable the fibre port because it is waiting for a dynamic WWN to be assigned by a library. This prevents SCSI Toolbox from accessing the drive. This is a known issue and is documented in KB-1014719.1.

Solution

The first solution is to open the tray and disconnect the TTI (LDI) cable from the drive. The drive will now function normally.

A second solution is to use HP LTT to access the drive from the Ethernet port. The HP LTT tool allows you to upgrade the code and retrieve drive dumps via the Ethernet port on the HP LTO5 drives.

VOP at present only allows you to upgrade the Dione code on the HP LTO encrypted drives and the Belisarius code on IBM LTO encrypted drives.  It will not upgrade drive codes.

HP LTT is available on the  Oracle Storagetek Tape Support website.
