FSC 32CB is a temporary recoverable ESCON interface errors logged from VTSS.

This error is an ESCON channel error ONLY (vtss ICE cards).

Changes

Cause

If multiple ICE card ports receive FSC 32CB...

If no channel card is fenced, the cause can be outside of the box.

--This error can occur if the channel paths are interrupted such as a host or system reset or IPL.

--Or, if an external device such as a switch or director has failed.

If one ICE card port receives an abnormally high percentage of FSC 32CB

If no channel card is fenced, the cause can be outside of the box.

--An external device such as a switch or director port has failed.

--The ICE card could be faulty.

Solution

Review the status screen and/or the DOP of the VTSS for issues.

This error typically does not fence a FRU, but is indicating communications issue which is often a cable or in the customer's ESCON channel network.

If a Host system has been reset recently, it will generate a high volume of errors that exceeded the expected threshold.

TSC Troubeshooting process:

  1. Retreive the base files from the VTSS for review.
  2. Review the hic_stat.dia the verify the box did generate the FSC32CB SIM/MIM
  3. Review the pfaelg4a.cnt and pfaelg4a.dom files to see the number of temporary errors logged and to which channel ports they are on.
  4. Review the status screen and/or the DOP of the VTSS for issues.
  5. If multiple ports, identify the ports that have a very high volume of errors in order to help the customer identify a common external source.
  6. If one port only, identify the ICE card.

Before replacing a channel card, perform the following.

1. Clean cables
2. Swapped cable for the port receiving the CHK2 errors with a known, good port or cable.
3. Replace the cable connected to the bottom port or replace both cables attached to this card ICE13.
