Symptoms

Replication between two Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage Systems fails with error messages after configuration has been changed or a factory reset was executed on target side.

Common messages are:

Source:

  • Broken pipe

Target:

  • Incorrect source system

Cause

Replication creates a trusted relationship based on a token, which is created during setup of the replication.

One major part which goes into the replication 'association' is the IP address of source and destination, in other words the Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage expects the exchange of data and the acknowledgements to happen through the same network interfaces using the same IP addresses specified during the configuration phase.

Important considerations:

  • Routing must be correct before starting the configuration or you might lock yourself into the wrong interface, host routes are recommended.
  • Replication actions are based on IP address
  • You CANNOT change IP address after the configuration has been set  (NOTE: This restriction has been removed in the 2013.1.x (AK-8) release)
  • Both nodes in a cluster need to replicate to different IP address on target
  • Replication source and destination must be same major code
  • Replication destination must be the same or newer minor code release
  • There is currently no way to move packages between storage pools or change the IP address associated with an action.

If the IP addresses for the replication source & target systems has been changed.  The target system may show an 'incorrect' source system.

Solution

To recover from this situation it is necessary to remove the replication setup and all related actions, packages and snapshots. Then a new replication setup needs to be created with the correct and final settings.
