When trying to establish an 8GB link on an Brocade 8GB capable Switch, you might detect the following error message:  "Mod_Inv - Speed Mismatch / Incompatible SFP"

From a switchshow:

Index Port Address Media Speed State Proto
==============================================
0 0 010000 id N4 No_Light FC
1 1 010100 id N4 No_Light FC
2 2 010200 id N4 No_Light FC
3 3 010300 id N8 Mod_Inv FC "Speed Mismatch / Incompatible SFP"
4 4 010400 id N8 Mod_Inv FC "Speed Mismatch / Incompatible SFP"

6 6 010600 id N8 Mod_Inv FC "Speed Mismatch / Incompatible SFP"
7 7 010700 id N8 Mod_Inv FC "Speed Mismatch / Incompatible SFP"

We can see the same behavior for 10GB SFPs and valid Brocade SFPs ,  ie on a 6510 :

Cause

This is caused by the usage of non brocade branded SFP modules.  Any NON Brocade branded SFP in an 8GB FC switch will display "Mod_Inv" (Module Invalid) output in switchshow.

On the new 16GB switch 6510, and incorrect replacement or SFP insertion could cause the same error, see doc
SFP Replacement on a Brocade 6510 Fibre Channel (FC) Switch (Doc ID 1516925.1)

Solution

For a Brocade 8GB capable Switch ( for example Brocade 300) you need to install the following SFP: 8G SWL 57-1000012-01 from Brocade.

For the 16GB capable switches, From "Fabric OS Administrator’s Guide 53-1002446-01" page 373,
this is because we need to install first the "10 Gigabit FCIP/Fibre Channel license" :

"10 Gigabit FCIP/Fibre Channel license to
use 10Gb FC ports on FC16-32 blades,
FC16-48 blades, and the Brocade 6510."

Please check for the latest information on the Brocade web, this link does not exist now, a similar one should be available
