The upload of a Appliance Kit software release via ftp to a Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System fails with timeout errors on the CLI.

Transferred 696M of 703M (99%) ... failed
error: download failed: FTP response timeout

Cause

<Bug: 7070586> "Upgrade image download fails when ftp transfer lasts more than 60 seconds"

The cause for this limitation of the Appliance Kit Software is known and is related to following items

This is a known limitation of Curl 7.20.0.
All version of Appliance Kit software of revision 2010.Q3 or before are affected
FTP timeouts after file transferred completely (though the download is complete libcurl gets timed out)

Note that this will affect upgrades to any release, if done over a relatively slow network until a software release containing the fix has been installed.

Solution

Implemented Fix

Since 2011.1 uses libcurl 7.21.1 an upgrade to Software release 2011.1 or later will implement a fix for this timeout issue and it should not be observed any longer.

Workaround:

As a workaround it is recommended to use HTTP instead of FTP. With HTTP you have the choice between CLI or BUI for uploading the Appliance Kit Software.
