Brocade 5100 Switch - Version Not Applicable to Not Applicable [Release N/A]
Information in this document applies to any platform.
Brocade 5100, running Fabric OS v6.1.1a or earlier.

Symptoms

Brocade 5100, running Fabric OS v6.1.1a or earlier, with two fan/power supplies installed and just one connected to external power  because there is either no A/C connection or its power switch is turned off  will incorrectly report the fan (not connected to external power) as faulty.

EM-1034 Fan <unit num> set to faulty, rc=20006.

Cause

When two combination Fan/Power Supply units are inserted into the Brocade 5100 and one is not supplying power (i.e. there is no A/C connection or the power switch is turned off), the fan (still) receives power internally from the alternate fan/power supply.

Unfortunately, until external power is provided to the fan/power supply, Fabric OS is unable to read its fan tachometer. Essentially, the fan/power supply tachometer will read ZERO on this unit until it is connected to external power and turned on.

This situation leads to Fabric OS falsely reporting the fan/power supply as faulty.

Solution

To avoid this issue, connect the power cord to the fan/power supply and to external power before seating it within the Brocade 5100 and then turn on the fan/power supply’s power switch as soon as possible after it has been fully installed/seated.

A fix for this problem (DEFECT000231909) was introduced to Fabric OS in v6.1.1b, v6.1.2, and v6.2.0; with this change, if the fan/power supply is not receiving external power, without reporting faulty status (as before) the following message is presented:

HIL-1610 Fan/PS unit <unit num> not supplying power, fan speeds not available. Please ensure that the unit has power and the switch is on.
